Bayeux Talk Series 2026/27 – Talk 1

Exhibiting the Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is the most famous artwork to survive from medieval Europe. The 70-metre-long embroidery narrates events leading to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and the Norman Conquest of England.

As the only contemporary visual depiction of these events, it is a witness to history as well as a daringly ambitious undertaking, cinematic in its storytelling and imagery. Professor Michael Lewis discusses the story of the Bayeux Tapestry’s loan to the UK and its exhibition at the British Museum.
