Reading Abbey Gateway Rooftop Tour
A guided tour inside the restored medieval Abbey Gateway followed by rooftop access for aerial views of Forbury Gardens and the Abbey Ruins.
This tour explores the recently restored medieval Abbey Gateway, covering its history and role in the Abbey Quarter, including stories of Abbey monks, visiting royalty, links to Jane Austen and the conservation work that restored the building.
In small groups, participants can then access the Gateway rooftop for elevated views of Forbury Gardens and the Abbey Ruins. The Gateway also hosts a pop-up display about Jane Austen created by University of Reading students in collaboration with Reading Museum.
Accessibility note: The Gateway has no step-free access and includes uneven steps and floors. Rooftop access requires three flights of steep steps (including circular stairs) and a very low doorway. The rooftop element is not recommended with small children.
