Reading Abbey Quarter Tour
A 90-minute guided walking tour of Reading’s Abbey Quarter, including exclusive access to the Abbey Gateway and connections to Jane Austen and Reading Abbey history.
This guided walking tour explores the heart of Reading and the history and heritage of the Abbey Quarter, led by Official Reading Museum tour guides. The tour starts in the Story of Reading Gallery at Reading Museum and continues outdoors to key Abbey Quarter sites.
- Highlights include: the Hospitium, Reading Abbey Ruins, and stories linking Reading Abbey with Henry I
- Exclusive access: the Abbey Gateway, once part of the school where Jane Austen studied and lived
Accessibility note: The Abbey Gateway is a historic listed building with no step-free access and uneven steps and floors. The schoolroom is accessed via two flights of steep steps (around 30 steps). The tour includes a substantial amount of walking and standing.
